Design a Video Game (May 2019)
In 2018-2019, fourth and fifth grade GATE students learned about video game design. The project was a big one and lasted most of the year. During the process, students found out that an interesting video game has lots of components and it's those components working together that make the game so interesting. Students needed to:
* write an original story with a problem and solution
* create story-specific characters and develop their background history
* decide on four settings for their game level locations
* draw the logo and cover for an advertising package
* create three screenshots from their game
* draw glyphs (pictures) to represent the characters and elements in the game
* design code and the coordinating top levels for four gaming levels
Even though we worked on this project for over six months, some students didn't finish. Lots of details were included and some things took longer to complete than we originally anticipated. The students who finished designing their video games moved on to learn how to write computer code on Code.Org.
