In 2009-2010, our universal learning concept
was change. We learned that change is all around us. Change
can be good or bad. And most importantly, we learned that change
causes change.
At the end of the year, each student changed
the Monopoly board to make their own Monopoly game. Third
grade students made Monopoly games about Las Vegas & Beatty
Elementary. Fourth grade students made the Nevada edition of
Monopoly. Fifth grade students made versions of Monopoly that
had some connection to the United States: landmarks, athletes,
states & capitols, celebrities....
This was a big research project so students
worked with a partner to gather information for their game.
All of the information was typed onto property cards.
The back of the property cards had the Monopoly information
for buying houses and charging rent. Students
also changed the Chance and Community Chest cards to names
that went along with their theme. Making houses, money, and
themed playing pieces was lots of fun!
In the end, everyone made a Monopoly game.
It was great that each student (all 100!) had a playable game
when they finished this project!
